ANIMALS

The problem with animals is that they rarely do things
when you need them to.

Neither do they understand that your deadline is getting
closer, or that you need to get off to another assignment.

Over the years, photographing animals has caused me
more stress and frustration than any other sort of
photography.

But if you get it right the results can be very satisfying.

To this day, a well-known former Gloucester Mayor still
calls me "The Rat Man". This is in reference to a shot I
captured of a rat being chased by a jackdaw. Pure fluke!

I was walking between jobs when I saw something moving
under a car wheel. I took a closer look at it through my
70-200mm lens, and as I did it ran out and was immediately
attacked by a jackdaw.

Instinct made me focus and shoot and I caught this unusual
image. Slightly unsharp I know - the camera was on a 6Oth
second - but I don't think it matters.

The former mayor saw this picture and still remembers it
to this day. The picture appeared in the BBC's
Wildlife Magazine
.

The picture also illustrates that you should always carry a
camera!
