  KOSOVO

My association with The Rifles, goes back many years.

I covered events on the day that the regiment received their
colours from the Duke of Edinburgh on their amalgamation
at Windsor Castle, London.

I have also covered numerous freedom parades and joined them
during their peace-keeping duties in Belfast, Ireland.

In 2004 I joined the regiment once more in Kosovo,
where they were keeping the peace between the Serbs
and the Albanians.

I accompanied the soldiers on street patrols through Pristina,
and into volatile housing estates and villages.

I witnessed first-hand the desecration of churches and found
myself in the middle of a shooting incident. Intelligence had
tracked down a man who had shot and killed a policeman two
weeks previous. They shot him in his legs whilst he tried to
escape.

He was not alone, and whilst soldiers conducted a search for
his two armed colleagues I photographed the event.
